Let’s talk about Hair…

“… Remember there’s a lesson

In Every crevice

Every curve

Every dimple

Every scar

Every follicle

There’s a lesson in loving on yourself

Love the parts of you that you keep hidden behind the shadows…”

I’ve been on a hair journey for years. I’ve gone through styles and colors. One thing that is not consistent in my journey… is my hair. For years now, not many people have seen my hair in its natural state unless it was a short, relaxed style. I don’t think I consciously had a dislike for my hair, I just liked my hair better, in certain styles, with hair.

Not all my hair

This is a short glimpse of my hair journey, but one thing that is present in the majority of these photos is NOT my hair standing alone. I started doing my own hair, along with family and friends around the age of 16 I believe. So its been a long time, maybe since a child that I’ve gone for a long period of time just wearing my own hair in its natural state. Are you the same way? Do you feel pretty in all your natural glory? Why or why not? These are questions I’ve been contemplating over the last few weeks. In the past, I’d play in different styles and switch up with no problem but never with my own natural hair. It’s funny, I think of Tabitha Brown and her hair “Donna,” like what would my hair really say to me if she has been hidden all these years? What has she been saying? I think I’m starting to listen. Can you be around someone you like with no additional hair or makeup? Can you be around people you don’t know au naturale? Do you feel naked without it all? Why don’t we feel pretty as we are? What has society put in the air that makes us feel that we can’t (or won’t) stand on our own beauty? Because yes, it is a choice, yes it is your perogative what you do with your hair. I just want you to think about it, do you know you or your hair without adding to it?

This loc journey that I am embarking on is going to be hard. It’s been hard and I haven’t even had my appointment, just the decision alone has been tough for me. Feel free to join me, cheer me, share advice, etc.; I’m still working on not talking myself out of the appointment. As I am walking in this self reflection, how can I consider having a organization for young women to aid them in building their self confidence, but not accepting me as I am? I can’t name it ‘Lov’n Me,’ if I’m not. With all these self reflections, I’m taking the jump.

What’s up beautiful people!? So as promised, the blog gives you a little more information so you can SUPPORT, NETWORK, etc. Here’s the lineup of these amazing ladies (including me) that have shows playing on WDRBMedia. You’ll also see links to their businesses. Remember WDRBMedia is on 24/7, I’m just highlighting some of the people I know that have shows and businesses that I support.

Sundays at 12:30pm EST

I met Toya through my Bridal Makeup bestie, Courtney of Courtney K Beauty. Toya is an amazing hairstylist and has an amazing show that touches on a lot of different subjects. She recently brought in her boyfriend, Ron to co- host and it definitely gives her show a vibe because you get the male/female perspective (and you can feel the love between them). Here’s how you can connect with Toya:

Again, Courtney for the connect. I was brought in to assist with makeup services for a show that Brittany was doing. We stayed in touch after that show and she has continued to produce show after show that provides awareness for issues like Alzheimer’s disease. IAlign is not only a radio show, Brittany has her hands in dance and music, to name a few. Here’s how to connect with Brittany:

I met this talented young lady at my Bennett sisters, Jackie‘s book signing events because she was in charge of the desserts. Again, it’s always good to network because you never know who’s watching, who will pour into you or just say some encouraging words. Here’s how you can stay connected with DiviniT:

Listen, when I met C’andra through Courtney, we instantly connected. She is now a cousin, lol. She’s done my hair before, we’ve talked business, we’ve networked together; she is all around good people and I believe you can even hear that through the radio show. She discusses various topics, engages with her audience… you don’t want to miss it. Y’all forgot that I said she did my hair right, so click the link and schedule your appointment:

I met Molly through the homie Aj (who is more like a brother). We’ve stayed connected because of her support of me as a Makeup Artist, as well as my support of her business, Ajah Lip Creme. Most of the bridal parties that I have provided makeup services to have received Ajah Lip Creme in their touch up bags to keep their lips popping and moisturized. Here’s how you can stay connected:

Y’all know me, this is about supporting others.

Fridays at 11:45am EST

I met Kyra when I provided makeup services for her mother’s wedding, loved her spirit. She has since been doing some amazing things, graduated college, started the radio show, has a candle line and I’m sure she has some more up her sleeve. Side note: her mother Tara is a travel agent (click her name for more info).

Make sure y’all listen in and support these amazing women and all the services and products that they are providing, let them know you heard about them from ya girl NiSi.

Check out my pageant sister’s business G.E.M.S. (Growth, Empowerment, Motivation and Support), Lunesha will be interviewing me on June 11th at 11am! So be sure to join and follow the page so you’re there for it all, as well as G.E.N.T.S.

Episode 15

I met Courtney at the beginning of my makeup artistry journey and she has truly been a great friend and always there to brainstorm and lend an ear when I’m trying to get my life together, personally and professionally. We are there for each other and help make each other better. We have serviced weddings together, referred each other; as well as built our businesses by sharing our experiences, triumphs and trials.

Courtney Haynes of Courtney K Beauty

We both love giving everyday women the opportunity to feel comfortable in their own skin. We are our clients! You won’t see us everyday with makeup- we are everyday women with families, and building our brands; but when its time to step out… ‘we ready!’ We have a team of Makeup Artists and Hairstylists that we trust, should you need a glam squad for your big day. (Guess what?! Some of them may be on the Live tonight)

What are some things a Bride should consider when looking for a Bridal Makeup Artist?

Time- How long will your day be? What time will all of your vendors arrive? The bridal party’s arrival time? Be realistic when planning your day and leave a cushion for things that may come up since you can’t predict the weather and so much more.

Snacks- Make sure you eat as well as your bridal party. We as service providers try not to take ‘lunch break’ to keep everything going. Everyone needs to stay hydrated. Be careful when trying to make sure your waist is snatched. You also want to make it through the day.

Know your coins- Weddings can get expensive. Be realistic in what you can or can’t contribute for your bridal party’s beauty services. Don’t go in debt because of one day. You have the rest of your lives to make more moments and memories.

Are these questions that you are asking? Do you need more clarification? Leave your questions and comments below and/or join us for the Facebook Live tonight.

We are letting you inside our in depth conversations, giving more tips and behind the scenes information on what it takes to be a bridal makeup artist and what things Brides should consider. Be there TONIGHT at 8pm EST on Facebook Live (the time below is for the west coast folk). Click below to set your reminder!
